Big road win for the Mavs
The Dallas Mavericks has a night to remember at Madison Square Garden. The Mavs won 114-90 as the club legend Dirk Nowitzki scored in what could be his game at MSG a season-high 14 points. “I always enjoy playing here,” Nowitzki said. “If it was my last time it was definitely one of my favorite places to play.”
Luka Dončić had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists in his first game at Madison Square Garden. “It was great. For sure we needed that win. We were struggling on the road,” Dončić said. “It was great to play here and I’m looking forward playing a lot of years here.”
The New York Knicks are a team with the worst record. This was their 11th loss in a row. It was Dennis Smith Jr. who left his mark against the Knicks. He scored his second career triple-double – he ended with 13 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds, while Harrison Barnes led the Mavs with 19 points.
While Dončić is yet to find out whether the coaches will appoint him as an All Star reserve, he was named to the World Team in the Rising Stars Challenge. His honorary coach will be his mentor Nowitzki. “I told him he’s got to play hard or I’ve got to sub him out,” Nowitzki said. “I’m going to be tough on him. I want to teach him a lesson.” After Dončić was told, Nowitzki said he’s going to be hard on him, he said: “See, that’s why I want to change teams. I don’t want to play for him.”
The Mavs continue their road tour with a visit to the Detroit Pistons on Thursday.
