Mavs came up short in Washington

WASHINGTON – The Dallas Mavericks continued their three game road trip with a loss to the Washington Wizards 132-123. The Mavs fell to 1-8 in their last nine games. Luka Dončić did everything to end Dallas’ losing streak. He scored 31 points, 11 rebounds, seven assist and four steals.

Dončić has the rest of the season to show he could carry a team and grow as a leader. He did that in Washington. “Absolutely,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “It was almost impossible to get him off the floor tonight because he was playing so well. He struck a terrific balance between drives, the outside shot and involving teammates. And he was our leader out there. I loved the way he played.”

Dallas lost nine of 11 games since the trade deadline. The Mavs are now tied with Washington with the NBA’s seventh-worst record. “It’s been very difficult,” Dončić said. “It’s my first season of losing. We’ve already lost as many games as I’ve lost in my life. Yeah, it’s been hard for me, but I kind of know what the direction is for the team. So I’m kind of trying to get used to it and home for a better season next year.”

Dwight Powell scored a career-high 26 points.

Dallas will face the Orlando Magic on Friday and then return home for the two Texas clashes on Sunday and Tuesday.
